As David Attenborough explores the Galapagos Islands, he encounters one of its most iconic inhabitants – the giant tortoise. These creatures, which can live for over a century, have long fascinated scientists and nature enthusiasts alike.
One of the most emotional moments of Attenborough’s journey comes when he meets Lonesome George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise. At the time of Attenborough’s visit, George was estimated to be around 100 years old and had spent decades as the only remaining member of his subspecies. Despite numerous attempts to breed George with female tortoises from other subspecies, he had never produced viable offspring, making his ultimate fate all the more tragic.
Attenborough’s interaction with George is both poignant and heartwarming. As he gently strokes the tortoise’s massive shell, he reflects on the incredible life this animal has led, and the importance of preserving its legacy for future generations.
Throughout his journey, Attenborough encounters numerous other giant tortoises, each with their own unique personality and characteristics. From observing their feeding habits to marveling at their sheer size and strength, Attenborough provides a fascinating look at these remarkable creatures and their place in the delicate ecosystem of the Galapagos.
But the Galapagos Islands are home to many other fascinating creatures as well, including the Marine Iguana. These large, prehistoric-looking reptiles are the only marine iguanas in the world and are well adapted to the harsh conditions of the Galapagos shoreline. Attenborough’s encounter with these creatures is both awe-inspiring and a little terrifying, as he watches them swim and bask in the sun, completely unphased by his presence.
Overall, David Attenborough’s journey to the Galapagos Islands is a must-see for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. With his trademark wit, intelligence, and warmth, he provides a fascinating glimpse into one of the most unique and biodiverse places on the planet.
Rest In Peace George….You won’t be lonesome in heaven…
I am absolutely enchanted by Sir David Attenbourough's narration. Wish I could be involved in one of such activities 😍

JUST Another CASUAL ANIMAL ON YOUR ZOO.
Why isn't his DNA being used to clone and regenerate and reintroduce his species with eggs from another of the Galapagos Tortoises? Scientists are blowing their horns for all sorts of reasons, why not for some actual good rather than for "reviving" a potentially deadly virus from 50,000 years ago?
I'm glad in God's kingdom we will no longer eat meat from a dead creature I'm sure the meat can be real but not because it came from a slaughtered animal. I'm no Vegan or vegetarian but I'm glad we won't need them for for sustenance.
Wtf is happening with that ship in the background?
There is literally nothing greater than watching the international treasure David Attenborough communicate an extinct species over its evolution. Creaky Lonesome George hanging with creaky Sir David. ❤️ 🐢 👴
They should bring in coyotes to get those rats!
WTF WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT SHIP?!
We are the PROBLEM!!!
I love hearing about the Galapapo's Islands. Bless the Tortoises & Lonesome George 🐢. 🌬💜🕊✌
